Edward Scissorhands is an amazing soundtrack. The album has two main themes that comprise most of the music. The first is introduced in the first cue, "Introduction (Titles)", and gives the feeling that a grand fairy tale is about to begin. With the chorus singing the melody and the celesta and harp giving accompaniment, it sings to the soul and provides a sense of magic.
The second is teased in "Storytime", but makes its first full appearance in "Ice Dance. The vocal counterpoint in this theme is beautiful and the strings back up the theme in a satisfying way. Outside of "The Grand Finale", this theme is never allowed to come to a natural conclusion, highlighting the tragedy of the score.
My favorite track is "Edwardo the Barber", which takes a break from the fairy tale landscape to give us a dose of pure fun. My favorite part of it is the fiddle solo in the middle. The plucked strings and accordion back up a remarkably frantic performance that simply brings a smile to my face every time I hear it. The only downside? It's too short!
Edward Scissorhands is a joy to listen to. It's easily one of the most magical and tragic soundtracks I've heard and I highly recommend it.
